A badly fitted cover does more harm than no cover at all. Trapped moisture causes mould and rot, and a cover that flaps all winter will chafe through gelcoat. This guide covers what actually works through a British winter.

What to look for
Breathable, not just waterproof
A fully waterproof, non-breathable cover traps condensation underneath and creates exactly the damp, still conditions that mould and rot need. Look for a breathable fabric that sheds rain but lets vapour escape, and leave some ventilation.
Support the cover
Water must run off, not pool. A ridge pole, frame or even a few padded uprights stop puddles forming, which is what splits covers and collapses them under winter rain. Pooled water is the single most common cause of cover failure.
Protect the chafe points
Anywhere the cover touches a sharp edge, cleat or stanchion will wear through by spring. Pad them. Old carpet, pipe lagging or purpose-made pads all work.
Tie-down and wind
UK winter gales will find any loose edge. Use plenty of tie-down points, tension it properly, and check it after every blow. A cover that flaps will sand your gelcoat.
Shrink wrap as an alternative
Professionally applied shrink wrap gives an excellent tight seal and copes well with wind, but it is single-season, costs more and needs vents fitting to avoid the same condensation problem.
